Today is a quiet day, normally, and I am not playing with any motorized equipment. Had to do something though, so decided to assemble a work table I bought the other day. It’s one of those simple and small, raise/lower (manually), tables that has room for tools.
15 minutes and the thing was together, didn’t even need the guide 👅 One of our neighbors decided to start the chainsaw and do some yard work, and I figured what the heck.. I’ll pull on the recently added mower! I pulled twice to see that it turned and had compression and then primed the carb like 4 times. Two more pulls and the thing fired right up 🔥 Ran impressively clean and silent and the self propelling worked like a charm. All that’s really wrong is the gas lever is broken, but I have a quick fix for that in mind (video coming real soon).
Once I’ve cleaned out the grass and dirt that was in the mower and collector, and given it a nice power wash; I’ll list it for sale at like ~$110 or so and accept a tad lower if offered 💵
A preface; I suffer from tough migraines, and today was not a good day. I did work my day job, but had to lie down after, to recoup. A couple of hours rest and I felt like doing a simple afternoon project.
A while back (before the big Covid outbreak) I picked up a kitchen table with extensions, to use as a work bench/surface. A couple of weeks back I also picked up a 1m x 1m sheet of cold rolled steel, to use in projects. Now, because of the new welder, I decided I wanted to have a metal surface/work bench to use as a welding table, and this was right in my mind. Had to cut a bit off the sheet, but an angle grinder and a cut off wheel did that job easy.
All in all I spent under 30 minutes on this, and now I have a great working surface to also weld on. The table can no longer “fold” together, but I don’t mind. Not in my use anyways.
Right now, I sitting here waiting for a confirmation on a new pickup it looks like I scored. It was listed for free, I jumped right on it, but the seller said it was gone in under a minute. Then, while working on the table, I got a message “He reconsidered and didn’t want it. You still interested?”. I answered Yes right away, but for almost an hour now there’s not been a confirmation. Might have to wait and pick up tomorrow, or I might have to pass as well ✋
Update; Got the go-ahead to pick up the mower, an address about 25 minutes from me. Was told it was set outside the gate, and to just pick it up. Drove to where the GPS told me, but couldn’t find a house number and certainly no mower outside a gate. A BIG drive around to get back into this one way street, and by chance I saw a guy with a mower that matched the pictures… Stopped and sure enough, it was the one.
The guy told me it was one that was left at the house he bought, and that he had put fresh gas in it and pulled, but no luck. That’s fine and dandy and I can’t wait to dig in. Now, tomorrow is Ascension Day, so no day job and probably no noisy work outside (no starting of mower) but I might just do some welding, because the weather has warmed up nice 😃
Picked up a kids bike the other day, painted pink over black paint. The painting is done without prepping, so it’s flaking off, but I don’t mind as it’s not going to be a bike anyways.
Yesterday I picked up a “new” mower and the whole story is kind of weird… I jumped on a listing (Tuesday) on Finn, advertising a Partner lawnmower for free, and it’s almost identical to the beater we run at home. 10-15 minutes later, I got a reply from the seller saying I got it and that she was heading out, but would leave the mower outside her garage and I could pick it up there. I told her thank you and that I would start right away. Got in the car and plotted the GPS then set off. 5 minutes later I got a notification from Finn on my iWatch, and it was the seller saying: “Sorry, the mower’s not mine; have to check with my daughter. Wait until tomorrow!” Turned around and told her we’d check back Wednesday. Wednesday came and I asked if she had heard from her daughter. She confirmed and said once more that I could pick it up outside her garage. This time, no correction so a while later the mower is home with me; BUT!
It’s not really visible in these pictures (check the video below) but if you look to the left of the Partner logo on the yellow cover, you see a hole and a “line”. This mower is almost split in half! Needs a fair bit of welding, but that’s quite alright since I have a new welder and all.
Now for the weather. It’s so cold outside, the other day we had snow in the air!!! Almost in the middle of May, and there’s snow..?? It’s not the first time that happens, but I don’t like it. I am currently waiting for a bit of warmth so I can work outside in the evenings. Wish I had a garage or a workshop where I could stay warm and still have plenty of room to work 🍀
A couple of weeks back, I jumped on a listing on Finn. It was for two bikes (for youths) and it was only a 10 minute drive from me. The seller got a number of people requesting them, as they were for free, but I managed to be the first one. All of 25 minutes I was out, picked them up and was back home. One of the bikes was in pretty good shape and one needs some brake work.
The brand is Velosa I think, or if that’s the model, I don’t know. Put it up in my stand and gave it the once-over. Lubed up the chain, adjusted the gears and checked the brakes. I spent less than 15 minutes working on it, and I’ve listed it back on Finn. Listed for ~$60, but I’ll accepts ~$40.
Next project today, not including the other bike, is welding the lawnmower that needs it with my brand new welder 👨🏭 It’s been a busy day at work (although I do work from home) so I’m not sure I’ll get to the mower until tomorrow. It’s also a bit windy outside, so filming might be problematic.
Oh, and I also listed my old flux core welder for sale, hoping to recoup a little from the expense of the new welder. Just listed though so have to wait a few days probably.
This is the welder I’ve been using, and it’s still the original spool of wire in the machine. I listed it for ~$100 but I will accept a tad lower. Also included is a new and full spool of wire.
So.. I have neglected this site for a very long time, but today I figured I’d post a quick one on the latest video I made. I got this project for free, all I had to do was hook up my trailer and go pick it up.
It wasn’t very far from me and the whole pickup took just over an hour from start to finish. I made this quick video and did a very quick diagnostic, looking at what it would need. Because of this whole Covid-19 thing, it’s very hard to get shipments into Norway (I’m still waiting on parts ordered months ago) and this made me think of flipping it.
I took some decent pictures and put it on Finn.no (sort of like Norways Craigslist). I got an offer of ~$120 and he wanted to pick up in an hour. I took it and told him to come. Two hours later, a no-show, and I contacted him back. Told me he couldn’t make it that night, but wanted to postpone to the next day. I said OK, but that I would need confirmation early the next day, to get a specific time.
Mid day, next day, I heard nothing from the first guy but had gotten another offer (better) so I called the first guy up. He was almost 10 hours away, on another pickup so he couldn’t make it that day either. I told him I had to let it go if he couldn’t make it but that I would sell it to him for the original offer if he could arrange pick up. He said he couldn’t and that I could sell to the next guy. Just over an hour later, the second guy showed up and we lifted it onto his trailer.
I got just over ~$160 for my trouble and I am putting that into finding a better starting point for a project. I still have active searches going and get notified every time there is something interesting given away for free.
I won’t say I make much money on stuff like this, but I find it refreshing every time I make a dime or two.
