Pickin’ free stuff

I watch a lot of YouTube videos, and I see so many videos from yard sales, garage sales and what not. This is not a thing here in Norway, and certainly not anything like town wide yard sales… The only thing here is Finn.no (sort of like Craigslist) and watching the free listings like a hawk! I have alerts on anything that’s posted for free in my area, and that is 98% where I get my “new” stuff.

However; Any time any motorized equipment is listed, you have to be quick. You have to contact the seller within a minute, maybe two, if you want to be lucky. Yesterday I was notified of a free lawnmower, and I had sent a message to the seller in under a minute. I was still not the first one! I also have a listing on Finn, where I tell people I pick up motorized equipment, if they’re getting rid of it. That way they don’t have to go to the trouble of driving it to the dump, which is usually what happens.

This video is from yesterday, showing the items I picked and also a few of my listings that’s being flipped.

The Husqvarna mower I picked up yesterday, is from the listing I have of picking up equipment. I don’t get a whole lot that way, but occasionally. It needs a bit of work, new pull chord, new throttle lever, new governor spring and work on the propulsion. For now, I’m setting it aside, because I just can’t get new parts over here. I ordered a carb kit from the USA, in early March and it got here this Friday!!! Two months, all because of Covid-19.

Another thing I’ve realized is: because of Covid-19, I might struggle to get more gas for my brand new welder when I run out. All Jula’s in Norway are out of the refill option, but one of the stores semi-close to me has one bottle left. Luckily, the tank holds 2500 liters of gas, so I’m set for a good while.

Now, I’m just waiting for it to dry up a bit from last nights shower. I want to get out to work on my stuff. I noticed that there is an issue with the gears on the Diamant bike I picked up. I think the wire is too loose, but I’m not sure. It’s one of those old 3-speed gears that are locked in the back wheel. Never worked on one of those, but I’ll figure something out 😃

Free bike, flip

A couple of weeks back, I jumped on a listing on Finn. It was for two bikes (for youths) and it was only a 10 minute drive from me. The seller got a number of people requesting them, as they were for free, but I managed to be the first one. All of 25 minutes I was out, picked them up and was back home. One of the bikes was in pretty good shape and one needs some brake work.

The brand is Velosa I think, or if that’s the model, I don’t know. Put it up in my stand and gave it the once-over. Lubed up the chain, adjusted the gears and checked the brakes. I spent less than 15 minutes working on it, and I’ve listed it back on Finn.
Listed for ~$60, but I’ll accepts ~$40.

Next project today, not including the other bike, is welding the lawnmower that needs it with my brand new welder 👨‍🏭 It’s been a busy day at work (although I do work from home) so I’m not sure I’ll get to the mower until tomorrow. It’s also a bit windy outside, so filming might be problematic.

Oh, and I also listed my old flux core welder for sale, hoping to recoup a little from the expense of the new welder. Just listed though so have to wait a few days probably.

This is the welder I’ve been using, and it’s still the original spool of wire in the machine. I listed it for ~$100 but I will accept a tad lower. Also included is a new and full spool of wire.

Bad weather!

I am just enough of a couch potato, that when it’s bad weather I’m inside 😂 I wish I was outside, because I want to flip the bikes I picked up the other day, but it’s cold and damp and I’m instead watching learning videos when I’m not working my day job.

There hasn’t been any good items up for grabs either, so I haven’t been out for a pickup since the bikes. There was two tillers up for sale, but I didn’t catch any of them until someone else had picked them up… There are loads of items listed every day, but nothing that I can make an easy profit on. Chairs, tables, couches, misc. kitchen items, and so much more, but; Not for me.

Just checked the forecast for tomorrow (which is a Holliday) and it just might be enough of a clear up that I could venture outside and have a gander on the bikes. Let’s hope so!

Apr. 28 2020 – Update; More flips

Just shot a quick video, posting some thoughts and such.

I picked up a couple of bikes today, got them for free. I’m planning on spending a couple of hours on them to make sure gears and brakes work fine and that tires have and hold air. Then flipping them for a few hundred kroners, something like ~$50-60 or thereabouts.

I’d love for you to check out my YouTube channel (link opens in new window). Make sure to subscribe and ring the bell, to get notified of new uploads. I love reading comments, so comment and let’s have some fun!

Selling off, #Pickup2Profit

My search for items in the giveaway section yielded another score the other afternoon. A Mantis 2-cycle tiller was given away and I managed to be first in the running, and went and picked it up. Another one hour pickup, and it was in a non-running state, unknown what the issue was. I got it home and quickly realized that it was the pull start assembly not engaging the flywheel. Pulled the assy off and noticed that it seems to be missing a part between the pull chord and the flywheel.

While unscrewing the pull start, the screws were loose so it was clear somebody had been in there. I imagine they lost the part in question and just put it away. Turned the flywheel and the motor spins nice, and it seems to have excellent compression. I could start it with a drill or something, but I figured I’d just post it for sale and see what I get.
Posted it yesterday and and today a guy contacted me. I posted it for ~$70 or best offer, and I’m prepared to accept lower. Still nice profit for a free item. I could try and locate the part missing, but again it’s hard to get parts to Norway, so I’m letting it go.

Another item that’s up for sale is the rototiller project. If I get a decent offer, I’m giving the profit towards a new or better used tiller for the garden. I pooled the motor, tiller base, pulley and boss together for ~$200 or best offer. Going to be interesting to see if someone bites on that one. The motor alone is a good piece of equipment, just needs a cleaning and lube, and of course an oil change and service. Something I could do myself, but I have a few lawnmowers I’m putting some time into and if I get them running (been outside a couple of seasons) more going out for sale.

First post in almost two years?

So.. I have neglected this site for a very long time, but today I figured I’d post a quick one on the latest video I made. I got this project for free, all I had to do was hook up my trailer and go pick it up.

It wasn’t very far from me and the whole pickup took just over an hour from start to finish. I made this quick video and did a very quick diagnostic, looking at what it would need.
Because of this whole Covid-19 thing, it’s very hard to get shipments into Norway (I’m still waiting on parts ordered months ago) and this made me think of flipping it.

I took some decent pictures and put it on Finn.no (sort of like Norways Craigslist). I got an offer of ~$120 and he wanted to pick up in an hour. I took it and told him to come. Two hours later, a no-show, and I contacted him back. Told me he couldn’t make it that night, but wanted to postpone to the next day. I said OK, but that I would need confirmation early the next day, to get a specific time.

Mid day, next day, I heard nothing from the first guy but had gotten another offer (better) so I called the first guy up. He was almost 10 hours away, on another pickup so he couldn’t make it that day either. I told him I had to let it go if he couldn’t make it but that I would sell it to him for the original offer if he could arrange pick up. He said he couldn’t and that I could sell to the next guy. Just over an hour later, the second guy showed up and we lifted it onto his trailer.

I got just over ~$160 for my trouble and I am putting that into finding a better starting point for a project. I still have active searches going and get notified every time there is something interesting given away for free.

I won’t say I make much money on stuff like this, but I find it refreshing every time I make a dime or two.

New series

Hey guys, about time to write something again.
A couple of days ago, I picked up a free lawnmower and got it home to do some work before selling it again. It was given away as non-starting, but it had been run a couple of weeks ago. I did some very basic testing like spark, air filter, etc. Nothing bad, except the fuel smelled funny, almost like diesel. The previous owner said she had run it dry, and then filled it up and couldn’t get it to start again. I’m going to empty the tank, open the carb and clean it out and hope that sorts it. It fired for a second or two, using start spray directly in the carb.

Doing those small tests, brought be an idea; I’m going to start a new series of videos on my YouTube channel. Pickup 2 Profit, sounded like a great name so that’s what I’m going with. Here’s a link to my first video in the series. This first item, I’m doing in multi part videos, however I think I’m going to make 1-video “shows” that are a bit longer in the future.

Hope to see you again and I hope to have you watch, comment, like and subscribe to my videos!
